RT.Hon. Oniyitan Akinbode Calls for Free and Fair Elections; Urges Youth to Reject Electoral Malpractices at the Upcoming Local Government Election

The Speaker Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) RT. Hon.Oniyitan Ezekiel Akinbode has  Calls for Free and Fair Elections; Urges Youth to Reject Electoral Malpractices at the Upcoming Local Government Election.

RT. Hon. Akinbode made this know in a press release made available to the journalist at his office in Abeokuta on Wednesday 13/11/2024.

Hon.Oniyitan emphasized the critical importance of upholding democratic principles in the upcoming elections. The Speaker called for free and fair elections, urging all citizens, especially the youth, to actively participate in the electoral process while rejecting any form of electoral malpractices, including vote buying and voting destruction.

“As we approach this pivotal moment in our democracy, we must ensure that every voice is heard and every vote counts. It is our collective responsibility to uphold the integrity of our electoral system,” said Speaker Akinbode. “I urge our young voters, who represent the future of our nation, to stay vigilant and to stand firm against those who seek to undermine our democratic values through corruption and manipulation.”

The Speaker underscored the importance of informed voting and encouraged young people to educate themselves about the candidates and issues at stake. “Engagement in the democratic process is not just a right; it is a privilege. Young people have the power to shape their future, and I encourage you to exercise that power wisely.”

In light of recent reports of attempts at vote buying and other forms of electoral misconduct, the Speaker reiterated the need for robust enforcement of electoral laws. “Our institutions must be empowered to investigate and prosecute those who attempt to undermine our democracy. We must foster an environment where free and fair elections are the norm, not the exception,” he stated.

The Speaker also called on civil society organizations and community leaders to play an active role in promoting awareness about the importance of free elections and to encourage the youth to reject offers of corruption or manipulation. “Our democracy thrives when we all stand united against injustice. Let us work together to ensure that our elections are a true reflection of the will of the people.”

As the election approaches, the Speaker invites all citizens to come together to celebrate democracy and to commit to a peaceful and transparent electoral process. “Let us honor the sacrifices made by those who came before us by safeguarding our right to vote, and by ensuring that our elections remain free, fair, and just for generations to come.”

The Speaker also called on State Government to please make adequate arrangements of the security personnel that will protect the citizens that comes out and perform their fundamental duties by voting and also call on the Electoral body that all eyes are on them, they should give room for transparency and accountability.
